Up-Close Quail

bird flying by hunters

In early March I was photographing a hunt at Prairie Wildlife, in Mississippi. Federal Ammunition had a large group there, and the lodge was documenting the experience. The conditions and wind were such that the quail were always flying at me and hindering clear shots for the hunters. No matter where I positioned myself, it seemed that it was always “the right place at the wrong time” for a cool image. I was concentrating on getting the birds in focus and the hunters slightly blurred. This shot—although taken from the hip and totally lucky—was a great example of what I was trying to do. And, by the way, safety was observed by all and the quail made a clean getaway.
