Five Things to Do at Primland

Primland

From a shooting aficionado’s perspective, Virginia’s Primland Resort offers just about every type of shotgunning activity under the sun. The impressive gamut ranges from 5 Stand clays to walk-up upland hunting to true driven shooting and everything in between. Although a wingshooter might find it tempting to spend every waking hour with a gun in hand, the resort is an equally great place to enjoy myriad on-site non-shooting activities. Here are five “downtime” things at Primland that guests will want to indulge in.

Guilt-Free Gunning

If there were ever a place where you could slip away with your shotgun with impunity, it’s Primland. Go ahead and leave your spouse, kids or grandkids behind when you head off to shoot. With options like tennis, horseback riding, ATV-ing, exploring, Frisbee golf and more, they’ll be having as much fun as you are. If anything, it might begin to feel like you are the one missing out. Not to worry, though, you’ll be able to jump right in when you rejoin them after your shoot.

Become a Fly-Fisher

It’s amazing how similar wingshooters are to fly-fishermen. The demographics and psychographics are almost identical. In fact, marketing surveys often indicate that 50%–70% of bird hunters are either fly-fishers or have an interest in taking up the sport. If you fall into the latter category, your Primland visit presents the perfect opportunity to get started. The resort’s Orvis Endorsed fly-fishing department has the instructors, gear and facilities to get you casting and catching fish in a flash. You’ll make some great fly-fishing memories at Primland and, more importantly, acquire the skills necessary to henceforth enjoy all the wonderful things the world of fly-fishing has to offer.

Stay in a Treehouse

The Blue Ridge Mountains are renowned for their panoramic views, and although scenery is something that’s typically appreciated from a distance, Primland offers an incredible lodging option that allows its guests to mesh with it. The Resort’s Tree Houses are elevated lodges that sit amidst forested mountainsides and offer the most spectacular views in the region. Enjoy the vista from your deck in the evening and from your bedroom window in the morning.

Swing a Club

Primland is home to The Highland Course, which is one of the finest golf courses east of the Mississippi and recently ranked the #1 golf course in Virginia by GolfWeek. Designed by renowned course architect Donald Steel, the 18-hole, par-72 course plays across ridgetops and over valleys. Breathtaking views abound, and the course can be accessed via an easy walk from your lodge. This is not something you want to miss, so do what you can to work a round into your itinerary.

Have a Tobacco Barn Cocktail

A visit to Primland can be a whirlwind of exhilarating activity, but it’s also a great chance to unwind and relax. As with everything else, the resort offers an array of options for those who want a little time to chill. The Tobacco Barn is a great example. This historic structure is a short walk from the main lodge and is the perfect venue at which to spend cocktail hour. Kicking back in the barn with a hand-crafted seasonal cocktail (or glass of wine or beer) before sitting down to a gourmet meal back at the lodge is yet another great way to soak up the amenities Primland has to offer.
