Kenetrek Bridger High Hikers

Kenetrek boot

When it comes to producing hunting boots, few companies have the field cred of Kenetrek. Since 2006 the Montana-based bootmaker has been crafting footwear to handle the toughest terrain and most-challenging conditions. In fact, the company was born out of Founder and President Jim Winjum’s passion for sheep hunting and his mission to design a boot he could wear for long treks in the high country.

With an eye toward using them mostly in the tamer wilds of New England, I recently tested a pair of Kenetrek’s Bridger High Hikers. The uninsulated, lightweight (3 pounds per pair) boots have 7" leather uppers, ankle-securing K-Straps and Windtex waterproof, breathable membranes.

As a nod to the boots’ mountain-hunting DNA, I chose as a proving ground the local ski area, where I made multiple trips up, down and around the slopes and surrounding woods. Being that it was midsummer, there was no snow, but the cover was thick and lush.

Right out of the box, the Bridger Highs laced up snugly and securely. Little breaking-in time was necessary, as the fit loosened quickly and there was no pinching or rubbing. The soft, padded ankle collars were very comfortable, and the high tongues offered extra protection for my lower shins.

The boots proved excellent for ascending and descending steep inclines, as my feet were locked in and my toes never felt cramped. They also offered plenty of stability on sidehills—and try as I might, I was unable to roll my ankles. Kenetrek’s Supportive Footbeds and nylon midsoles provided plenty of arch support, and the aggressive tread of the KT-Light outsoles gripped with gusto.

After trudging many miles in these purpose-built hunting boots, I couldn’t have been more impressed. From their fit to their features to their construction, Bridger High Hikers are everything that I look for in a pair of upland boots. You can bet that I’ll be wearing them in the field this season.
