To say that this past wingshooting season was marred by health concerns is an understatement. It’s a story that needs no repeating. Fortunately, the prospects for the coming season appear exponentially brighter, and bird hunters are surging toward the light. Proof of this was that within days of being announced, Shooting Sportsman’s 2021-’22 Readers & Writers Adventures were practically filled. It’s wonderful to see so many wingshooters raring to hit the field, and we have decided to keep the ball rolling by adding two additional hunts: at Joshua Creek Ranch, in Boerne, Texas, and Flying B Ranch, in Kamiah, Idaho.
The hunt at Joshua Creek Ranch will be the first-ever collaborative trip between Shooting Sportsman and The Orvis Company. JCR has built a stellar reputation for delivering a true five-star experience, and this hunt will showcase everything the renowned lodge is famous for. With an itinerary that includes duck shooting, a Continental pheasant shoot and walk-up quail and chukar hunting, this event will feature an unprecedented variety of opportunities. The trip’s host, Reid Bryant, is the Endorsed Operations Manager for Orvis and an Editor at Large for Shooting Sportsman, making him the perfect wingshooting ambassador.
The event will kick off February 12, 2022, with an afternoon check-in and a 100-target warm-up on the clays course. Day two will include a morning of mixed-bag upland hunting and an afternoon flighted-mallard shoot. Day three will feature walk-up hunting in the morning and a Continental pheasant shoot in the afternoon. On the final day, February 15, guests will partake in a hearty breakfast and can enjoy some free time on Joshua Creek’s beautiful compound before their midday checkout. In addition to the wide array of shooting, the $5,400 cost covers luxury rooms, exquisite dining and a wine/bourbon tasting. The non-shooter cost is $740.
One of the nation’s original luxury wingshooting destinations, Flying B Ranch has received numerous accolades for its exceptional mixed-bag hunting over pointing dogs; top-shelf lodging and dining experiences; and picturesque setting. It is a perfect venue for the kind of warm, congenial, event-style atmosphere that characterizes our Readers & Writers Adventures. This trip will begin with a February 20, 2022, pickup at the airport in Lewiston, Idaho. The following three days will include morning and afternoon no-limit hunts for pheasants, chukars, Hungarian partridge and quail behind well-trained pointing dogs. The trip will conclude on February 24 with breakfast at the lodge and a return shuttle to the airport.
This hunt will be hosted by Shooting Sportsman’s Director of Wingshooting, Terry Bombeke, and the cost of $6,200 will include just about everything (airport shuttle, single-occupancy lodging, dining, licenses, ammunition, clays, gun rental, bird processing) except taxes and gratuities.
