The 2023–’24 Readers & Writers Adventures

Farmland hunting at Heartland Lodge.

It’s that time of year again: time to announce Shooting Sportsman’s upcoming Readers & Writers Adventures! Each year we carefully compile a slate of hosted hunts at some of the finest wingshooting venues in the US. We draw heavily on readers and past guests to shape the most diverse and inspiring hunting opportunities. This year we will welcome guests to four exciting destinations to pursue a combination of pheasants, bobwhite quail, sharp-tailed grouse and Hungarian partridge. Please keep in mind that these hunts fill up quickly, so be sure to check your calendar and book early.

Kicking things off, from October 16 to 20 SSM Director of Wingshooting Terry Bombeke will host a group at Harpole’s Heartland Lodge, in Nebo, Illinois. This is classic upland hunting in farmland habitat with experienced guides and a collection of talented German shorthairs, pointers and French Brittanys. Hunters fly into St. Louis and, following a two-hour drive to the lodge, enjoy three days of pursuing pheasants and bobwhite quail. The cost of the trip is $5,245 and includes single-occupancy accommodations and everything but gratuities, taxes and the cost of shipping birds home.

Two weeks later, from October 29 to November 2, SSM Editor in Chief Ralph Stuart heads up a three-day hunt at Firesteel Creek Lodge, in Isabel, South Dakota. The property’s 200,000 acres offer incredible opportunities for pheasants, sharptails and Huns. Guests fly into Bismarck, North Dakota, and the cost of $5,195 includes single-occupancy accommodations and everything but gratuities, taxes and the cost of shipping birds home. This is an epic upland hunt in a well-managed mix of food plots, native grasses and brushy draws. Bring your walking boots.

From December 7 to 11 we will hold our first-ever trip to Prairie Wildlife, in West Point, Mississippi. This is no-limit bobwhite quail hunting at one of the finest wingshooting destinations in the South. Terry Bombeke will host the trip, and guests will fly into Columbus, Mississippi. The cost of $6,295 includes single-occupancy accommodations and everything except gratuities, taxes and the cost of shipping birds home. If you appreciate hard-going pointing dogs and getting into multiple coveys of quail in classic grassland habitat, this is the hunt for you.

We round out the slate of Adventures with a trip from February 15 to 19, 2024, to Pine Hill Plantation, in Donalsonville, Georgia. This destination is a crowd favorite, offering a step back in time with bobwhite hunting from mule-drawn wagons. Terry Bombeke will host the gathering, for which attendees fly into Tallahassee, Florida. The cost of the trip is $6,280 and includes single-occupancy accommodations and everything but gratuities, taxes and the cost of shipping birds home. This is a bucket-list experience in the heart of Georgia’s quail country.
