The catalog of revived British gunmakers is stocked with illustrious names, including Lancaster, Greener, Churchill, and Atkin Grant & Lang. Now H.J. Hussey has been added to the list. Famed London gunmaker Henry Joseph Hussey has stood the test of time on the basis of the firm’s best sidelock model, The Imperial, despite halting production more than 100 years ago. Now Sportarm, a quality British gun retailer, has revived both the make and the model.
Sportarm has owned the Hussey name since 2008 but until now has offered only a range of branded luxury accessories such as cartridge bags, gun cases and gun slips. The leather-goods selection has included ephemera more suited to celebrating the shoot than participating in it, such as a wine-bottle holder, an oak-and-leather glass carrier, and drink coasters.
Now in collaboration with Spanish gunmaker Grulla Armas, Sportarm is once again offering a limited number of H.J. Hussey Imperial models. Based on Grulla’s best sidelock action, the gun is a self-opener with steel-shot-proofed barrels. It is engraved to Hussey specifications and comes with a canvas-covered leather case.
When asked about pricing, Sportarm Director Kevin Phillips said, “The imperial is based on the best model Grulla makes and has the best walnut-grade stock and forend. The retail price is £31,000 [$39,300].”
