James Purdey & Sons will toast its 210th anniversary this year by unveiling a bevy of 10 celebratory 28-bores. The limited-edition set will be built on Purdey’s triggerplate over/under action and feature large foliate scroll engraving. Exhibition-grade stocks with full pistol grips will be crafted to each client’s specifications, with the grip caps reading “1814” and “2024.”

“Details are understated and subtle, which is as it should be,” said Purdey’s Director of Gun Sales, Andrew Ambrose, who anticipates that the 28-bore will be well suited for hunting quail in the US. The concept emerged from a conversation Ambrose had with an American buyer more than 10 years ago on the subject of quail guns. “The client and I agreed there really hadn’t been anything produced by British gunmakers with that angle,” Ambrose said, “and given the popularity of quail hunting and the large numbers participating, there was a potential opportunity.”

The svelte set of bespoke smallbores can be personalized with any gamebird—not just quail—engraved on the action base and will be individualized by numbers 1 through 10. Each gun will come with a burgundy cartridge bag and soft case embossed with the client’s initials. A Purdey Damascus-blade hunting knife, snap caps and a gun-cleaning kit will round out the package.
