Since the 1990s, Krieghoff has been creating specially finished “Guns of the Year” to showcase its brand. In 2020 the German company chose Austrian-based engraver Chantal Schaschl to embellish its distinctive gun, and the result was a unique interpretation of the Galápagos Islands’ flora and fauna. This year Schaschl was again given the nod, and she has created a master work on the theme of “The Perfect Memory.” The platform is once again Krieghoff’s K-80/S model with extended sideplates.
The right sideplate illustrates a scene of animated pointers flushing three golden pheasants while a hen keeps vigil from the roost. The left side features a waterfowling tableau, with Labrador retrievers, several golden mallards and a Canada goose. The underside of the action shows a setter eyeing a golden pheasant while two ducks flush. A setter engraved on the toplever completes the interpretation of man’s connection to the wild and a celebration of the hunt.
Fine-gun engraving has traditionally been a man’s world, but talented women like Schaschl are carving a place for themselves that surely will encourage a new generation of female engravers.
