Pen from Holland and Holland

Holland & Holland’s Royal Scroll

by Douglas Tate

It’s not surprising that in our world of texts and emails some hark back with nostalgia to the era of handcrafted pens and copperplate cursive. Now Holland & Holland, in tandem with fine British pen maker Onoto, is offering a Royal Scroll fountain pen with engraved sterling silver caps, gold-inlay bands and checkered barrels intended to evoke the style of H&H’s top-of-the-line Royal model.

What H&H is to gunmaking Onoto is to penmaking. Dating from 1905, Onoto creates “limited-edition historic collections of fountain pens made in Britain for cultured connoisseurs with discerning tastes and inquisitive minds.” While fountain pens once ruled the roost, since the 1960s cheaper ballpoints have been remorseless rivals. Never indifferent to progress, the H&H pen comes with a rollerball conversion kit for ultimate versatility and practicality. Available for £900 ($1,080) in black or sequoia, each fountain pen is individually numbered and comes in a presentation box with a certificate of authenticity.
