If any gun epitomizes the sumptuous shotgun, it’s one made by Holland & Holland. No best maker has created more lavish doubles than the venerable British maker. Now for the first time in the firm’s near-200-year history, H&H has introduced color into its engraving process in an entirely new way. In the past colors of gold, silver, platinum and copper were used to create what company literature described as “wondrous scenes in glorious technicolor.” But tonality was limited by the metals available.
Now, thanks to a discerning American client with a vision of vibrant jungle scenes, Holland & Holland has introduced a color technique that features never-before-seen subtle shading on the metalwork of one of its shotguns. According to a recent press release: “A medical-grade resin compound with organic colour pigmentation has enabled the artisans of Holland & Holland to bring life to the client’s spirited scene.” Previously unknown to fine gunmaking, the procedure has its roots in haute horology and jewelry.
On the right side of the gun’s action, in a vivid display of rainforest imagery reminiscent of Rousseau, a parrot perched on exotic foliage surveys the surrounding jungle. A scarlet coiled snake, tree frogs, bright beetles and butterflies complete the scene. The bottom of the action features a leopard burning bright. “I must admit,” said the client, “when I visited the H&H factory and requested yellow and orange flames with a leopard embedded in the middle, I saw some raised eyebrows. However, they listened to me and delivered exactly what I envisioned. The result is a stunning piece that is truly a sight to behold.”
H&H’s new technique is not just a one-off. Adding color is now a bespoke offering available on the firm’s flagship Royal model. Clients can choose from an extensive palette—or a bespoke color-matching service can be arranged.
Luxury doubles are crafted with the intention that they outlive their owners, and Holland & Holland’s first foray into fine art will be a joy for generations.
