As every hunter knows, keeping equipment light, small and durable (including waterproof) makes a huge difference. After hours in the field, ounces can feel like pounds, especially as your game pouch hopefully fills. With this in mind, Garmin has developed the Alpha 10, the smallest and lightest dog-tracking handheld unit on the market.

The Alpha 10, which works with Garmin’s T 5 and TT 15 dog devices, weighs only 5.6 ounces and stands a mere 2.6 inches tall. Yet despite its small, lightweight size, it still has robust capabilities. It starts with a high-contrast display with a direction arrow and distance indicator that are visible even in low light. The unit allows the user to track as many as 20 dogs at distances up to nine miles. There are customizable training functions, including different tones and vibrations. Battery life is up to a week of use (40 hours), and the water rating is IPX7, which means the unit can withstand water exposure of up to 30 minutes.

Hunters can pair the Alpha 10 with the Garmin Explore smart-device app to allow for enhanced mapping. This allows the user to keep the handheld controller in a pocket or pack and use a smartphone or even a tablet to mark dogs’ locations and track them in real time. It’s even possible to pair the unit with a compatible Garmin smartwatch or Garmin’s DriveTrack, which offers in-vehicle dog tracking and GPS navigation.

The Alpha 10 has an MSRP of $400.
