From our January/February 2025 issue
It’s often been said: “If you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life.” Though for many of us, we either don’t know how to apply that, or the fear of chasing that “dream job” doesn’t seem realistic. The general manager of a private hunting/fly-fishing club, a general contractor and a dog trainer from Arkansas explored the possibilities, and through a passion for hunting waterfowl, hard work and faith, the result of their efforts is something truly special.
Located in north-central Oklahoma about an hour north of Oklahoma City is FowlCo Outfitters. The men and women who guide here are seriously “mad at” waterfowl—meaning they live and breathe to chase ducks and geese. They share the same passion as the lodge’s founders. Not only do the guides put in the time watching and scouting before guests arrive, but they also game plan with guests to understand goals and set expectations. Of course, it helps that FowlCo has acquired access to more than 400,000 acres of cropland, ponds, reservoirs, managed wetlands and river bottoms. The experience at this lodge is simply different in the best possible way.
According to the website, the target species on waterfowl hunts are dabbling ducks (mallards, pintails, wigeon, gadwalls and so on), lesser Canada geese, snow geese, Ross’s geese and white-fronted geese (specks). Hunting is typically out of A-frame blinds, layout blinds or pits, and most hunters will have the opportunity to take multiple species.
The well-appointed 7,000-square-foot lodge, which sleeps 16 guests in eight en suite bedrooms, is nestled in an agricultural area and provides the space needed to spread out, entertain and even watch thousands of ducks coming in to roost from the fire pit on the covered back patio. The in-house support staff is just as passionate and attentive as the guide crew.
As for the food, guests enjoy belt-loosening, Southern-inspired cuisine. The lodge even has a walk-in cooler expressly for wet-aging beef. You’re also sure to catch the wafting ambiance of fresh honeybuns paired with a scoop of ice cream coming out of Chef Brian’s kitchen. (Yes, that’s a staple and worth every calorie.)
While duck and goose hunting put these folks on the map, the lodge offers other great opportunities, such as dove hunting (in season), upland hunting for pheasants and chukar, as well as a 5 Stand setup

FowlCo’s unique approach works, which is proven by how quickly the lodge books—often with a significant waiting list. Do your best to get into a hunting party headed to Oklahoma, or if you’re like me, hope to get a last-minute invite by some incredible friends.
