Federal Duck Stamps Go Digital

The Federal Government has just given us one more reason to take our smartphones afield. Starting with the 2024–’25 hunting season, Federal Duck Stamps are now available in digital form.

On December 19, 2023, President Biden signed the Duck Stamp Modernization Act of 2023. The legislation, sponsored by Sen. John Boozman (R-Arkansas) in March 2023, was passed by the US Senate with unanimous consent four months later before receiving overwhelming bipartisan support in the US House of Representatives in December.

The law modifies provisions regarding the Federal Migratory Bird Hunting and Conservation Stamp—commonly referred to as the Federal Duck Stamp—including to allow an individual to carry an electronic stamp rather than a paper stamp at the time of taking waterfowl.

Available starting July 1, the 2024–’25 Federal Electronic Duck Stamp—featuring a painting of a northern pintail by Belgrade, Montana, artist Chuck Black—costs $29 ($25 for the stamp, $4 for the federal processing and convenience fee, not including additional fees charged by some states). Traditional methods of purchasing the Federal Duck Stamp—from a consignee, through a local post office, through duckstamps.com and online through the US Postal Service—will continue. A physical Federal Duck Stamp will be mailed to each e-stamp purchaser between May 10 and June 30, 2025.

Federal Duck Stamps are conservation-revenue stamps, with 98 cents of every dollar of the purchase price going to help acquire and protect wetland habitat. Each year sales of the stamps raise approximately $40 million.
