From our July/August 2025 Issue
GAIM is a virtual reality (VR) shooting simulator developed by Aimpoint, the inventor of red-dot sights, to revolutionize shooting simulations. Our tryout setup included a realistic wooden shotgun/rifle stock and codes to upload the simulation software to Meta Quest VR goggles (which must be purchased separately, starting at $300). The stock provides an authentic feel, allowing users to practice with a virtual gun that closely mimics the weight and balance of a real firearm. Setup was quick, gunfitting was intuitive and accurate, and we quickly were experiencing everything the simulator has to offer.
The clay shooting sports are well represented, as there are simulations of sporting clays, skeet, trap and 5 Stand. Rifle shooting can be experienced as well. But the real fun begins with simulated game: driven pheasants, wood pigeons, flighted ducks, wild boar, bears, stag, deer and moose. All are different simulations with stereo sound (you can hear the pheasants coming in). The simulator keeps track of your shots, and you can go back and analyze each one. You can review how you tracked a target, where you pulled the trigger, where the shot landed, and your follow-through. It really is amazing.
The immersive VR experience brings the excitement of rifle and shotgun shooting into the home, making it both fun and practical, and it is a lot easier and quicker than heading to the clays course or range. It is especially attractive on rainy and cold days! And kids absolutely love it. This is a great way to introduce young people to the shooting sports on a familiar platform.
Price-wise, you can purchase the “Complete” simulator package, which includes all of the scenarios except the one where you can build your own range, for $1,150; or you can purchase basic packages like “Hunt” or “Clay Shooting” for $590 each and add scenarios like “Wood Piegeon Farmers Field” and “High Pheasants” for $39 each.
This simulator really is a GAIM changer, combining innovative technology with realistic scenarios to offer a comprehensive tool for shooters ofc all levels. Its blend of practicality and entertainment would make it a valuable addition to any shooter's training regimen.
