Rigby’s Bespoke Shooting Brake

From our May/June 2025 issue

The shooting brake—roughly defined as a vehicle conceived to take gentlemen and ladies on the hunt with their firearms and dogs—has taken a sharp turn recently. Following the introduction almost 10 years ago of the Range Rover Holland & Holland Edition, another maker of fine British guns has doubled down on the concept of a rugged-yet-luxurious rig for wealthy sports. A partnership between John Rigby & Co., Squire Editions and Traditional English Guncases has resulted in a bespoke Land Rover Defender.

This is not your typical “Chelsea tractor”—meaning a glitzy SUV designed for off-road use that never gets its tires muddy—but rather a robust rig for hauling rifles and shotguns to where the game is. For Rigby’s first car, Squire Editions transformed a classic Defender 130 and included a double-drawer system by Traditional English Guncases—one drawer for guns and the other where magnums of bubbly and champagne flutes can be stored. There is also a pull-out awning under which campaign furniture can be set out for drinks and nibbles. Multiple Rigby signature features complete the package.

Rigby rigs are built entirely on a bespoke basis, so a wide range of customization can be accommodated. We asked Rigby Managing Director Marc Newton what Squire might build next. “They are making us a classic Range Rover now,” he said.

If you are considering a dedicated hunting vehicle with built-in security cabinets, drinks storage and even pressurized water for washing boots or the dog, a Rigby Land Rover or Range Rover may be the shooting brake of your dreams.
