“There are a number of high-quality bobwhite quail hunting destinations throughout the Southeast. I have personally visited most of these, and a good number of them have earned my praise. Standing alone atop my list is Rio Piedra Plantation, in Camilla, Georgia. I have hunted there multiple times over the years either on my own or as a member of Shooting Sportsman’s Readers & Writers Adventures program.
“Rio Piedra has earned the well-deserved reputation of setting the ‘gold standard’ for other such destinations in its part of the country. In fact, I have spoken to the owners, plantation managers and/or lodge managers of similar operations who have admitted to visiting Rio Piedra to observe and learn exactly how they do what they do. And what they do is ‘get it right.’
“The most important aspect to me is the quality of the hunt. The habitat is impeccably maintained and represents exactly what one would envision when thinking of premiere bobwhite quail hunting grounds. Their kennel is chock full of world-class bird dogs that are a delight to watch in the field. The guides have consistently been knowledgeable, personable and courteous. I have always reached my ‘daily bag’ (plus numerous bonus birds) during my visits.
“Second only to the quality of the hunt is the quality of the facilities, food and drink. Again, Rio Piedra Plantation is my favorite bobwhite quail hunting destination when I consider these attributes. I have always found the facilities to be modern and clean, the food to be delicious and the drink to be plentiful. The service staff is extremely courteous and professional. And the owners are very ‘hands-on’ and seem to always be available to greet and be of service to their guests. I'll be returning to this destination at my earliest opportunity.”
