A World-Record Performance

A World-Record Performance
By Ed Carroll

At 10:12 am on October 12, 2019, Weston Zolck of Herman, Nebraska, called “Pull!” for a pair of chandelle targets at Powder Creek Shooting Park, in Lenexa, Kansas. It marked the start of a 12-hour fusillade that shattered a world record so difficult to set that few have attempted it.

Led by CZ-USA’s Shotgun Product Manager and Pro Shooter Dave Miller, Zolck and three other young clay shooters—Levi Henrichs of Sibley, Iowa; Jessica Strasser of Waterford, Wisconsin; and Makayla Scott of White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia—set the world record for a five-person team by breaking 14,167 targets in 12 hours. That was more than three times the existing record, set in England in 2015.

As the holder of the one-hour clay target record of 3,653, Miller had experience in setting world marks, and CZ-USA chose the other four shooters based on the company’s dedicated support for youth shooting sports. In addition to holding qualifying shoots at the SCTP’s (Scholastic Clay Target Program’s) Nationals and the ATA’s AIM (Academics, Integrity and Marksmanship) Grand Championship, there was an essay contest.

And the young shooters did not disappoint. According to Miller, the group was set up in a straight line facing a field backed by a plywood wall. Behind the wall were MEC launchers throwing White Flyer targets. When all was said and done, there had been 17,250 targets thrown and 14,167—82 percent—broken. And for the record: All of the shooters were using CZ autoloaders and Aguila ammunition.
