Driven to Distraction

Up there among the most fun you can have with a shotgun: clay-target flurries. Simulated driven. Presented well, with multiple targets in the air at all times and at all angles, it’s an exhilarating challenge of dozens or hundreds of clays in a few minutes. Whether from a butt, with a loader or as part of a congenial and competitive line of Guns, this is all-out fun.

Chris Batha’s Shooting column in the forthcoming January/February issue offers an excellent look at “The Two-Gun Tango”—the dance-like choreography of shooter and loader when using multiple guns. Batha describes how the shooter must match the pace and precision of the loader for full effectiveness and for safety in close quarters.

The video here shows world-champion clay shooter George Digweed shooting with a loader in a grouse butt on a simulated moorland drive. Watch closely, and on several occasions you’ll see what looks like three or even four broken clays in the air at once. Is that even possible . . . ?

For gun clubs or shooters who want to put on their own simulated drives, the tools and technology are available. Promatic offers a six-trap unit called the Grouse Trailer and a three-trap unit called the Huntsman Game Trailer. The company will even deliver and set up the unit up for you . . . .
